44. Ampelius, father of the city, undertakes ?restoration work in the Theatre Baths

Description

  • Monument: Four fragments (two of which join) of white marble revetment. a and b both have an upper edge surviving; otherwise, all sides are broken. b is made up of two joining pieces.
  • Text: Inscribed on two faces.
  • Letters: Face 1 has letters with clear triangular trenches, which are probably the earlier inscription; cut at 0.165 from the upper edge, they are 0.175 high. Face 2 has letters cut 0.085 from the upper edge; they have broad flat trenches, and measure 0.275.
  • Date: Face 2 perhaps mid fifth century (prosopography).

Translation

1.a This too [...]|2.b [...] Ampe[lius ...]

Apparatus

Face 2 of b is most easily read as Ἀμπε[λιο-] a reference to Ampelius. The final surviving letter might be Η rather than Ε, but the traces do not seem to suggest Ρ, the only other real possibility.
